Turn the objective into something specific
Eco-friendly is a broad description, so begin by naming what you want to change. Is the aim to use less material, remove an unnecessary layer, choose a verified recycled-content stock or simplify the components? Each goal leads to a different discussion. Write down the existing construction and the proposed improvement before selecting a green-coloured design. A useful brief explains the intended change and the product needs that must still be met.
Review the whole construction
Make a component list that includes the main board or fabric, coatings, adhesive, window, insert, handle, thread and closure. A paper box or jute bag may include other materials that are not obvious in a photograph. Consider which components can be removed without compromising the purpose of the pack. Right-sizing is a practical design question: measure the contents and required clearance, then examine empty volume and the need for separate layers. Do not assume lighter always means better if protection becomes unsuitable.
Use environmental wording that the evidence supports
India's Central Consumer Protection Authority has published guidance intended to prevent misleading environmental claims. Its approach calls for clarity and substantiation rather than vague claims such as eco-friendly without an adequate explanation. For packaging artwork, identify what the claim applies to and any relevant conditions. A statement about one component should not create an impression about the complete pack. Ask the responsible business team to review the evidence and final wording before printing.
Distinguish stock availability from certified claims
If a certified or recycled-content stock is requested, ask what documentation applies to the actual material and order. FSC describes different labels for different sourcing claims; an FSC Recycled label and an FSC 100% label do not communicate the same thing. Do not add a certification logo just because a paper sample has an appealing natural appearance. Confirm the relevant supply-chain and trademark permissions before any mark is used. Availability of a stock and permission to print a label are separate checks.
Compare samples around the real use
Assess structure, print clarity and the intended packing method alongside any material objective. Record whether a coating or insert is essential or optional and why. For a bag, examine carrying requirements; for a food pack, review the actual contact application separately; for a gift box, check whether the presentation can be simplified while keeping the assortment organised. Keep the decision record practical so later reorders do not add back an unneeded layer or replace a component without review.
Make the quotation precise
An evidence-led enquiry should include the product, contents, existing pack reference, desired material change, quantity, artwork and destination PIN code. Ask the quote to name the agreed construction and clearly separate confirmed attributes from options still under review. Alide can discuss lower-material and paper-based approaches without assuming every option carries an environmental certification. Final suitability, documentation, pricing and timing must be confirmed for the actual pack. Describe what has genuinely been agreed, and avoid a claim that goes beyond it.
